How to:

Caring for your

new candle

So you new candle has arrived, you take it out of the box and breathe it in - you 'ahhh' out loud at the scent and get it lit. But did you know that there are some simple rules to follow to make sure you candle looks and smells great for longer?

Always burn your candle for at least an hour or until you have a fully melted layer of wax on the top

Not doing this can mean your candle tunnels - that's when it burns straight down the middle and you end up with lots of wasted wax on the jar. Burning for more than 4 hours is also a no-no.

Trim the wick

After use you might find that the wick is curling in or is looking a little lumpy - before lighting again, give the wick a trim, just make sure you leave enough wick to light - about 1cm is perfect.

Cleaning up sooting

Black soot on the container isn't a good look and if you stick to the tips above, sooting should be minimal but there is always a chance that you'll get some sooting as your candle burns. Fear not, the black soot is super easy to wipe off the container. Wait until the wax has fully solidified and wipe around the inside of the container with some tissue or a slightly damp cloth and it'll be as good as new!

Avoid burning in windy spaces

Draughts and wind can lead to your candle burning unevenly, increasing the risk of tunnelling and sooting - it can even affect the scent throw meaning that your candle won't smell as great as it should.

Storing your candle

When you're not burning your candle, store it in a cool, dry space away from direct sunlight - re-lid your candle after use or use a glass cloche to protect it from dust.

Cleaning your candle

Whilst not necessary, you might want to give your candle a little clean from time to time - a piece of nylon or a slightly damp soft cloth gently wiped over the surface of the candle should mop up any dust.
